EXPLORE THE VIRGIN FOREST OF PACAYA – SAMIRIA 3D/2N
Imagine camping for 3 consecutive days in virgin and floodable jungle, in a niche of high biodiversity of wild flora and fauna. This natural area is the largest and most protected in Peru, known as the "Selva de los Espejos", it is the right place to awaken the adventurous spirit, especially for nature lovers.
We will navigate water mirrors in search of dangerous piranhas, freshwater dolphins, alligators, snakes, monkeys, insects, sighting exotic birds and much more.
With the help of a local guide we will walk into the jungle and learn about traditional medicine and its importance.

Itinerary
DAY 1
- Pick Up from the airport or hotel
- Transfer to the city of Nauta by road.
- Trip along the Marañon River, upriver of 2 hours and a half approx.
- Registration at the ranger station
- Arrival to the community of Buenos Aires.
- Lunch.
- Walk through the primary forest.
- Return to camp.
- Dinner
- Night walk inside the reserve.
- Overnight in the jungle.
DAY 2
- Sunrise sighting.
- Animal hunting and bird watching
- Breakfast
- Hike to a lake and search for medicinal plants.
- Lunch.
- Artisanal fishing and swimming
- Return to camp.
- Dinner
- Night boat excursion in search of alligators.
DAY 3
- Morning exploration in search of wildlife.
- Breakfast
- Return to the community of Buenos Aires and purchase of handicrafts (optional).
- Navigation downriver to the city of Nauta.
- Return to the city of Iquitos (arrival at approx. 5:00pm).
- Transfer to hotel or airport.

Detailed itinerary
DAY 1
Pick up from the airport or hotel and transfer to the city of Nauta, we will travel for approximately 2 hours by road. This city is considered the Gateway to the Pacaya – Samiria National Reserve.
From Nauta, we will depart in our typical motorized boat upstream of the Marañón River for approximately 3 hours towards the Community of Santo Domingo.
During the Navigation on the Marañón River, you will have the opportunity to contemplate the impressive landscapes and the diversity of flora and fauna, such as river dolphins, birds and much more.
Upon arrival, we will check in at the Pacaya – Samiria ranger station
After registration, we continue sailing for about 30 minutes to the Community of Buenos Aires, on our way we will be able to delight ourselves with the wildlife along the banks of the river. Animals such as herons, black-necked hawks, kingfishers, cormorants, egrets, etc.
We will enjoy a typical lunch made with local ingredients
In the afternoon, walk through the jungle towards the primary forest in search of wildlife, observe the different species of animals in their natural habitat such as monkeys, birds, insects, rodents, reptiles and amphibians.
We will enjoy our dinner.
Walk through the ecological reserve at night, the biological activity differs a lot between night and day in the Amazonian ecosystem. Venture into the forest after dark, upgrading animal resources to create a new adaptation mechanism. Listen to the nocturnal sounds of the forest and watch for species that only emerge at night.
Overnight in the jungle.
DAY 2
Expedition in the early morning, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes and wildlife of the riverbanks. This is the best time to observe many species of birds, primates and sloths.
We will enjoy our breakfast with a refreshing fruit juice.
Walk through the jungle for around 2-3 hours to explore a lake or oxbow lake in order to look for the biodiversity, the rich flora and fauna of the primary forest. (Different species of birds, sloths, monkeys in their natural habitat). We will take an ethnobotanical walk, we will get to see the Lupuna (Ceiba petandra), the largest tree in the Amazon jungle and can exceed 50 meters. You will also see varieties of birds, insects, arachnids, reptiles and amphibians. If we are lucky, we might also see different types of boas, including anaconda and jaguar when it comes to water near the lake shore.
We will enjoy our typical lunch.
We will take a boat ride to try the artisanal piranha fishing, as the locals do. The guide will instruct you, help you and provide you with all the necessary equipment. If you are skillful, you can catch other species of fish.
Observation of pink dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) and gray dolphins or tucuxis. This is your opportunity to jump into the Pucate River and swim inside the Pacaya – Samiria.
Night expedition, we go in search of black and white alligators along the riverbanks, nocturnal birds, rodents and mammals that we can see during the silence of the night aboard our canoe.
Lodging in our camping tents, we will spend the night in the middle of the forest.
DAY 3
Early morning expedition, this is our last chance to look for more wildlife along the riverbanks. This is the best time to observe many species of birds, primates, and many other species of animals.
We will enjoy our typical breakfast
We start our way back, stopping in the community of Buenos Aires to stretch our legs, you will have the opportunity to buy beautiful handicrafts made by the inhabitants with their own hands and at the same time your purchase will be contributing to local development.
We return to the town of Nauta, once there, we prepare to return to Iquitos. Return to the airport or hotel in the city of Iquitos.
End of program.
